It can be daunting locating productive bass spawning areas on vast lakes such as South Florida’s Lake Okeechobee. Florida native and tournament hammer Jessie Mizell believes covering water fast and having a keen awareness of your surroundings is the best way to find prime spots.

For Mizell, the right stuff is a hard bottom. Sand and shell-littered substrates provide the optimal base for bass egg fertilization and incubation. Find these areas, and prespawn bass are usually closeby. Mizell shares pointers for identifying spawning flats based on vegetation present.
